FILE 10 : UMEDA HOKUTO
___________________________________

Site manager (M.): Good afternoon, everyone. Our guest this time is Hanakimi's Umeda Hokuto-san. Umeda-sensei, good afternoon.

Umeda Hokuto (U.): Yo.

M.: We have received many questions for you, but almost all of them are about your love life. We have gathered all of them here. But, first of all, we'll have the normal questions. "If you weren't a doctor, what kind of job would you have?" "Why did you become Ousaka Gakuen's health doctor?"

U.: Becoming Ousaka's Gakuen's health doctor was because of a bet I made to my university's mentor. I lost the bet. If I hadn't been a school's health doctor, I would've been a regular doctor or maybe even continue my study. But I'm comfortable with this relaxed job.

M.: I wonder what bet could it be... Okay, you commute to work everyday from the apartment where you live alone, don't you? "What kind of place do you live in?" "Who does the cooking and the laundry?"

U.: I live in an apartment in a residential area about 15 minutes away from the center of the city. I do my own cooking and laundry.

M.: By the way, you graduated from Ousaka too, didn't you? "Is it a good thing or a bad thing to be working in the same place as your high school homeroom teacher, Honmachi-sensei?"

U.: None in particular... except that old man is quite noisy. (<-- He usually smokes in the school infirmary. He reaps what he sows > author's explanation.)

M.: When you were in high school, you had the chance of writing a performance that was staged... "Have you ever met your friends from that performance, like Chayamachi-kun, again?"

U.: Sometimes. If both of us have the time to spare, we often go and have a drink together.

M.: Isn't it wonderful if you can still be good friends with old friends despite being in different circumstances...? While you were still in Ousaka, there was already the annual Christmas ball, wasn't it? "Did you dance with any girls? Or did you dance with a boy?"

U.: I danced with the most candid girl among those who talked to me. She was a really candid person, almost like a guy's, so it was really easy to talk to her. Even now we still meet from time to time.

M.: Ah, now we finally know that Umeda-sensei do have female friends! (laughs) Okay, let's change the topic now. "What is your favourite perfume? Could it be similar to Ryouichi's?" "What type of mobile phone do you use?" It seems that there are a lot of people who want to have the same items that you use! About your mobile phone, tell us your number! ... (laughs)

U.: Although I have many of them, but I don't use perfumes. But Ryouichi seems to like Egoiste Platinum. (By the way, personally I don't like Gucci's Rush for Men and Jeanne Arthes' CO2. But CO2 is kinda light, isn't it? > author's digression.) My type of mobile phone? I just changed it so what is the one I'm using now? I can't remember. I don't usually give out my number in a place like this.

*Translator's digression: Egoiste Platinum is a line from Chanel, BTW.

M.: The issue of your favourite brand of clothing has appeared before in the comics but "is it Dolce?"

U.: I think Dolce's pattern season was good, but not so the rest. That coat (the one I wore during the school trip) was forced on me by Ryouichi. My favourite designer is Helmut Lang. But actually I don't really care whether my clothes are from a branded designer or not.

M.: I don't really understand about brands myself but, in the end, I just choose whatever I like. Okay, next, you are wearing spectacles but "why don't you wear contact lenses? What is your eyesight degree?" And then besides that, it seems that you are a very perceptive person, so "do you have any sixth sense like Kayashima's?"

U.: My eyesight is actually not that bad, but I feel comfortable wearing spectacles. It's not like I can't wear contact lenses, but I don't feel like putting something inside my eyes. Sixth sense? Nothing of that sort.

M.: I see. You didn't really understand what was going on when Nakatsu was possessed by a spirit. Okay, next: there was a familar scene from "Let's Keep On Dancing" but why did you dance during your university reunion?

U.: During that last reunion, we were having a drinking game.

M.: Nowadays it's quite a hassle to organize a drinking get-together, isn't it? It seems like there are many things to do. But I'm sure you must get some satisfaction after all that effort (laughs) Okay, you've known Kinuko Masako previously. She seems to have some bad run-in with you. What exactly happened? Many people really wanted to know about this. It isn't like Kinuko at all to be so afraid of something...

U.: I can't say that in front of poor innocent little girls like our readers.

M.: Is that so? Well, it certainly is a mystery to us. Alright, I think I will move on to questions on your family now. Both your parents have such a youthful appearance; "how do you feel when you see them flirting with each other?" "Have you ever missed being together with your family and then go and visit them?"

U.: ... Well, it's natural for a married couple to have a good relationship, isn't it??!! (<-- Sounds like talking about a pair of strangers.) My mother is a good cook, so occassionally I do miss it. But I don't go home especially for it.

M.: I feel like trying Umeda Seira-san's cooking now. Okay, your father is the head of the school of traditional tea ceremony. Is it alright for you not succeeding him?

U.: It seems like Rio is going to succeed it, so it's not a concern.

M.: Oh, is that so! Well, this is quite a news! About your elder sister, "why do you seem to hate her?" "Is she the reason why you don't like girls?" "What kind of guy do you think would be suitable for Rio-chan? If it were an Ousaka student, who do you think it would be?"

U.: Sisters live to oppress their younger brother. (<-- a biased opinion > the author). As for Rio, whoever she chooses is fine by me. Right now, I don't think there's anyone suitable in Ousaka for her.

M.: Indeed. Alright, then. I shall move on to the part that everyone's been waiting for (?), the question on love! There are so many questions we received on this. But they are not that much different from each other. Sensei, please cooperate! Ah! Don't put that kind of face! Let's see, which one should I ask first ... (sweatdrop)

U.: Girls really like to talk about this kind of thing, huh?

M.: Alright, this has been asked a lot. "Do you like Mizuki"? You seem like you do. And next, "Besides giving advice to Mizuki, what other thing have you done to help her?" " What do you think will happen between Sano and Mizuki?"

U.: HUH?! (angry) Get your eye check! Go on! It's nothing special. It's just that it's difficult for her to get a medical check-up or a physical test (like swimming etc). what happens between the two of them is none of my business. Only they could know the answer.

M.: (Oops, he's angry now! .. Okay, let's move on *sweatdrop*) Sensei, you seem to like guys more than girls, "do you expect to fall in love with a girl?" What an interesting question this is, "expect to fall in love" *laugh* I think many readers would ask, "Sensei, how about a girl like me?" Because many of Sensei's friends have gotten married, "do you have any marriage plans? You're the eldest son ... don't you need to get married to a woman?" "How old were you when you began to like men?"

U.: I don't "expect", I don't "marry". Although I'm a guy, this is the way I was born, to like someone of the same gender. I don't think it's anyone's fault. The norm in this world is to love someone of the opposite sex, so people like me really seem like deviants. Although I can only fall in love with men, I could also love women whom I like as "people" (but not romantically).

M.: In the ways of love, it's each to his own, so I think it is a good thing that Sensei chooses to follow his own path. By the way, "what happened to the lover you used to have, Misaki-san, and to the man you met during that school trip? What happened after that?" "How many lovers have you had so far?"

U.: Stop asking me all these questions! (Aa! Umeda-sensei's bad mood is back again! > the author)

M.: Please ... please be patient for a while longer (spends 15 minutes persuading)

U.: ... Hmph. (<-- It seems like he is letting himself to be persuaded.) Yeah, I broke up with Misaki 6 months earlier and the guy in Sapporo was fun, and if the circumstances were right, we would've continue dating. How many people I've dated? Does that include people I play with? (<-- It seems like he doesn't even remember how many people he has played with.)

M.: Please think about it! Okay, next, "if you could date a student of Ousaka Gakuen, who would it be?"

U.: I don't do children.

M.: I see. We've talked about this before, so if you don't want to answer, please just say it. We would like to know a bit more about Kijima-san, the person whom you've liked since your high school days, "even until now, is Ryouichi the person you love most?" "Because you didn't really confess your love to Ryouichi, do you have any plan to do that in the future?"

U.: I'm bad at giving up. My "plan" is still "undecided". Anyway, if I tell you the story of my feelings for him, it'll just be the story of my downfall since the moment I realized my feelings for him a long time ago.

M.: "What do you like about Ryouichi?" "What do you think about Masato-kun?" "Has there been any developments with Ryouichi?"

U.: What do I like ...? Aaah... it's hard to say. I like everything about him. Masato? It seems like he is prepared to stand on his own feet now, so that's a good thing, isn't it? Developments ...? I don't think I'm obliged to answer that.

M.: Ah ... I see .. *sweatdrop, sweatdrop* Please don't be mad. Okay, "What's your favourite type?" "What do you think of Akiha-san?" "When was your first love? Was it a boy? A girl?"

U.: I think I'm particularly weak against those who are different between the outside and the inside. Although Akiha falls under that category, I don't want to get into it. Somehow it seems like a bad situation to be in. What that is, I can't clearly say. In my case, my first love wasn't Keiko-sensei the kindergarden teacher, but it was a young man, the school bus driver.

M.: Thank you for confirming so many things! We will stop this long interview here for a while. Please wait a moment until I call you in again.

U.: Got it.
