What happened between them twelve years ago ended up in unrequited love on Umeda's part, as he claimed Ryouichi pretended his feelings didn't exist. Whether
Ryouichi is actually serious or just taunting and teasing Umeda remains unknown, although Ryouichi did have a habit of doing the latter in the old days. In present
time, Umeda is constantly seen flirting or 
kissing other men despite those feelings for Ryouichi - perhaps he had accepted his
love would always be unrequited, perhaps not - but who says he can't have fun in the meantime? ^_~ Introduce Akiha Hara, a very relaxed photographer who could
not seem to keep his hands off Umeda, something that never failed to irritate the man beyond imagination but at the same time, perhaps hinting to the readers
as a potential love interest for the doctor.
Both Ryouichi and Umeda have their own professions : Umeda as the school doctor and Ryouichi as a manager of a fortune-telling business. (He's extremely adept with hypnosis, as proven when he hypnotized Masato in Yume Miru Happa for business purposes.) However, Ryouichi and Umeda do meet at dates, mostly at Ryouichi's insistence from what we've seen in the manga. Ryouichi keeps tracks of Umeda's birthdays and sends him little gifts.
While it may seem like it's forever doomed to stay this way, Hisaya Nakajo did some illustrations featuring both of them, some hinting that maybe it's not a matter of 'if', but a matter of 'when'. If this is the case, then I would be overjoyed because I think when it comes to these two and their past memories, their story is left unfinished; I do hope that one day, they'd come to a resolution.
